The Alt Guide to Shopping Vintage

Vintage styled woman

Want to uncover vintage treasure every time? We show you how with our ultimate guide to shopping vintage.

Accessorise your way to a vintage look

If you don’t like the idea of pre-worn threads, you can still create a retro look with vintage accessories. Love the 60’s look? Check out the collection of 60’s-inspired cheap dresses at high street stores like Next and team with some original vintage knee high boots, a swingin’ pendant and oversize vintage shades. 70’s more your thing? Team that brand new floor-sweeping jumpsuit with a real 70’s wide brim hat and accessorise with vintage silk scarves.

Know where to shop

Get to know your local vintage boutiques, secondhand shops, car boots sales and vintage markets. If you want to avoid stores that have been picked-over by vintage-hungry stylists and fashionistas, head out of town to quieter stores and charity shops. And if you’re looking for designer bargains, head to the posh part of town where you’re more likely to find designer vintage items.

Know when to shop

Most vintage shops restock over the weekend at car boot sales, so new stock arrives on the racks first thing Monday. This is the time to visit your local store and get first pick. If you can’t make it through the week, at least try to get there early on a Saturday.

Know your size

Standard clothing sizes didn’t start appearing in the UK until the 60’s, and sizing can vary from decade to decade and depending on where the garment was made – so ignore the size on the label. Instead, know your measurements, take a tape measure with you, and always try garments on

before you buy. There’s a great guide to vintage sizing at the Pinups n Art site here.

Alterations

If you fall in love with a one of a kind treasure but it doesn’t quite fit, remember that a good tailor can work wonders! Hems can be shortened and lengthened, shoulder pads removed, items can be taken in and let out or simply cinched in with a belt. A handy tip – if that cheap dress is missing its matching belt, check the hem – there might be enough spare material there for you to make a replacement belt yourself.

Look beyond the racks

As well as looking for cheap dresses and vintage garment bargains, remember to check out the jewellery, accessories and fabric sections too. You might just come across a knockout fabric that can be turned into a killer dress, skirt or even curtains or cushion covers for your swingin’ pad!
