Scenester

Alt Fashion attempts to decifer just what the hell a scenester is.

It's one of those recent terms that you've probably heard used to describe the kids who live on my space but it's literally much more than that. As I try to get to grips with the young un's & this latest alternative-esque trend heres a decifered attempt to properly explain a scenester to the UK population.

Initially a scenester is one of those kid's you see following the latest trend for example emo, but it's actually more in depth than that. Attempting to build a bridge between scenesters and every other genre here in the alternative scene is going to be a very hard task here @ alt fashion hq but hell we'll give it a go.

Most descriptions on the internet associate scenesters with an attempt to fit in to postmodern rules associated with current trends, films or bands.
Using the word scenester as an identity & a statement, they need to belong to something so they are a scenester.

Sceneter kids will take the simple route to fitting into a scene such as the recent example of emo being an in trend, most scenesters would think that the black/blonde hair makes an emo kid, emo & henceforth dye their hair black/blonde to become emo.

Seems simple enough, right? Well it's best to look further into scenester's than that in all fairness.

Scenesters are at the most popular or mainstream aspect of the alternative scene, you won't likely find most scenester's shopping at actual alternative shops; Topshop & New look are their 'forte' for want of a better word.

You can find them in reams of the latest mainstream fashion trends such as the current trends of long beaded necklaces, flat/kitten heeled shoes, short leggings, waist-high belts, headbands and polka dot vest tops. Alongside the emo adaption of studded belts, black/blonde hair, skinny tights jeans and the obligitary emo-esque band tee. Thats pretty much your average scenester.

The scenester trend is relatively new, teenagers have in this century at least followed alternative trends set by bands; you surely must remember the onslaught towards spooky kids in 2000 with the huge hoodies & baggy jeans; scenester is simply the latest stage teenagers are in nowadays, following bands like My Chemical romance, Panic! at the disco, Fall out boy & whatever indie dharlings the NME are plugging these days.

So, so far at least we've managed to boil down a scenester to a typical description without sounding completely catty about them, sure the more cliquey scenester's can be irritating but there is hope still. Having alternative culture reach a mainstream audience can be nothing but hopefully good publicity & will move the young un's on to better things once they discover more in their local scene.

As for most scenester's associating themselves with my space; yeah thats pretty much true. Scenester's will be the users you find with over 1000 friends & the angles photos, but pretty much everyone at least has a profile on my space even just for net stalking old friends.

So by now you should at least be more acquainted with what a scenester is, what they actually look like and the basics of the scenester culture. It is the alternative scene at it's most mainstream acceptable point but at least it should be moving them onto bigger & much better things.
