Camden is one of the key alternative areas in London, long associated for it's various markets, alternative clothing shops & clubs. Each weekend you can find up to 100,000 visitors descending on the markets & shops making it one of the largest market areas in the UK. From the stables market to the electric ballroom market, you can find a huge variety of alternative styled items whatever your personal tastes. Alt fashion took to the streets of Camden back in September to see the latest additives to the area & to capture the shops & markets on a weekend. First stop would be the electric ballroom market ( http://www.electric-ballroom.co.uk/), you can't miss it as soon you leave the tube station you can see the posters leading you into the purple building. Only open on weekends you can find a mixture of clothing, cd's & records over the saturday with a clothing & accessory market over the sunday. There is a vast mixture of clothing mostly vintage, gothic & punk. Next stop is the camden market, despite it's name this is not the main market. It is an area of small outdoor market stalls selling a variety of items from clothing, cd's, footwear & jewellery. You can find the market open throughout the week but with more stalls open during the weekend. As you walk back along the high street you'll find a huge mixture of shops providing you don't get distracted by the huge motifs outside the buildings! Some of the first shops along the high street are: Darkside http://www.darksideofcamden.co.uk/ Providing a variety of branded gothic clothing from the likes of sdl, raven, xs punk & underground shoes. Criminal damage A recently opened store stocking their current ranges from baggy jeans, electro-punk designed dresse's, spiderwebbed shirts & tees. Scorpion shoes & boots One of the many shoe shops you'll find along the high street stocking alternative branded footwear from new rocks, underground shoes, dr martens & tuk. But before you can even glance at the other shops you'll find the canal market which is one of the smallest markets with the entrance tucked inbetween the canal bridge & shops. Here you can find some select stalls selling band merch & incense alongside a few shops including one of the few punkyfish stalls in camden this being the largest with 2 floors & eye candy a plenty throughout the store. Leaving the canal market you can find some more shops including: Punk glamour A newly opened store selling some fantastic vivienne westwood-esque designs from tee's to jumpers & skirts. Punkyfish A smaller store concentrating on their more mainstream styled items from legwarmers, short skirts & jeans. After dark fashions http://www.afterdarkfashions.co.uk/ Stocking a mixture of gothic & cyber-esque wear from corsets, tees, elegant skirts & cyber trousers. oddballs http://www.oddballs.co.uk/ A juggling supply shop where you can occasionally catch the staff doing some demos. If your after poi, devil sticks & diablo you'll find them here. At the side of oddballs you'll find the entrance to the camden lock market & the market building. THis is the market that started it all in 1972 with a range of bohemian stalls, nowadays you can find a range of arts & crafts stalls, jewellery, incense, clothing & some food & drink stalls further down the lock. You can also find hidden away in one corner of the market Fairy goth mother http://www.fairygothmother.com/ Selling some of the range of corsets on their site from polka dot to chinese silk corsets alongside jewellery & clothing. Walking back you can find the stables market which you'll notice by the huge row of food stalls on the entrance. A converted victorian horse hospital you can find lots of winding rows full of market stalls & shops. Cyberdog cyberdog.net The huge camden branch is an alcove of clothing, when you first walk in you can find their manic panic counter & couch jewellery with the dj in what was the chill-out area. In each alcove is men's & women's clothing alongside uv jewellery & bags. Pussycat Selling some fruits-esque clothing with unusual patterned dresse's & long tops in here. Black rose/dragstrip http://www.blackrose.co.uk/ You can't miss this shop for the boxed dummies outside. You can find rockabilly-esque clothing in the dragstrip side with gothic clothing on the other side. You'll be able to hunt out old lip service & phaze lines here too. Breathless http://www.breathless.uk.com/ Just before the food section cornered away you'll be able to find a selection of latex clothing in here. No wear No wear. A punk inspired shop selling knitted sleeves & jumpers, safety pinned ties, stripey tops & more. Spank http://www.spankonline.co.uk/ Selling cyber clothing, you'll be able to find their spikey bras in here alongside the dungaree trousers, jumpers & tops. Sai sai Slightly cornered away but anyone fond of fruits & gothic lolita inspired items will adore this shop. You can find size 8-10 clothing mostly but the punk & gothic lolita items are a rare find. From loli goth dresse's, sex pot revenge skirts, neck ties, leopardprint jackets & more. Of course there are far more shops here ranging from vintage clothing, hair extensions, jewellery, footwear, cyber, gothic & punk so it is well worth having a good walk around the various side streets in the stables market. Same goes for the high street where you can find a wide range of shops selling clothing, footwear, cd's, piercings & tattoos as well as variety of food stalls & pubs.
