Gorelesque
We already have burlesque; with influences from cabaret, & the 20's, & 50's eras. But what about this gorelesque word that we keep seeing crop up? What is it, & where does it originate from?
Gorelesque is a relatively new term; not bringing up much in the way of results from a straight search. But it's first use appears to date back a few mere years, being used as a term to describe more macabre burlesque performances using blood, & special effects. From the mock removal of organs, to faux surgery, & cuts. Adapting the 'gore' to the burlesque performance gave it a more macabre edge, whilst still retaining the cabaret element making the removal of organs slightly more comedic, rather than a more dark performance.
But the actual term gorelesque appears to have come into use to title these performances from the performers themselves.
No direct first use can be currently pin-pointed, with so many performers worldwide adapting the term; but one of it's first uses was from U.S performer Jezahell; used to describe the style of her performances; “Gorelesque is a clever little word that my boyfriend and I came up with when we were discussing what would be the best way to describe my burlesque show. I perform traditional burlesque but I put my own dark and gory spin on it.” [1]
Nowadays the term is used to describe performances from worldwide & homegrown UK talent's burlesque shows. With performers such as Violet eyes, & Poppy von tarte currently performing gorelesque styled shows.
But it's not just a part of burlesque, Gorelesque is also creeping into alternative fashion. Gorelesque as a fashion is more about horror, & a little touch of glamour.
The gorelesque style when it comes to performance fits in with the traditional burlesque look; but then you have the medical side of the look with nurse outfits, hats, & accessories galore used to add to the show.
In a more off stage outfit, you'll find a rockabilly, or fetish influenced oufit.
