Emo
Emo seems to be one of those confusing new trends to some, what with swarms of 'emo kids' in your town center in their armies of skinny jeans & panic at the disco tees but thats quite confusingly the same as a scenester in some cases.
Emo originally was used to describe bands in DC (U.S) in the 80's & then spanned into the emotional hardcore description more of us have heard of nowadays. Bands such as Dashboard confessional & Glassjaw being some of the more widely know actual 'emo' bands. More recently emo has become a widely used term covering bands who look a bit sulky but aren't uber enough to be goth hence why bands like my chemical romance are considered to be the forefront of emo to the young'uns these days.

As for emo as a fashion it initially started as an 'indie' styled look with lots of vintage & retro clothing used from faded band t-shirts to khaki jeans & bags covered in band patches/badges.

Nowadays it's more common to associate an emo look with thick glasses, side parted hair, skinny fit jeans, band t-shirts, coverse trainers as a key item & the obligitory eyeliner.
There is obviously two sides to emo with the 90's look first mentioned & the more commonly seen 'emo kid' look lastly described.
The latter look is more formerly associated with emo as a slang term these days alongside the 'wrist slashing' stereotype most commonly aimed at 'richey-ites' (i.e stereotyped manics fans) & crying at pretty much everything; this you can see documented in the probably now infamous "hope is emo" videos on you tube.
So you may be a bit more clued up on the background to emo now & safe in the knowledge that those emo kids hanging around your local park are the more stereotypical concept of emo. You can scratch your head in confusion again now.
