'07 in review
'07 has been a mixed year for fashion in the alternative scene. From the huge boom that was New rave to the continued expansion of Emo.
Early '07 saw the roots of the New rave style come into fruition, with neon colours, 80's inspired prints & a strange fondness for large pixels & paint splatters in designs. Helped with a push from scene friendly mags, NME and newly established zines at the heart of the scene such as Super super.
By summer New rave had exploded (pardon the irony) onto the mainstream side of the alternative scene with alt friendly high street stores such as H & M full of bright bold & eye watering prints & designs.
Companies at the heart of the scene like Charles of London, continued to bring out influential designs & Manchester brand Me & yu even pegged the "If you say Nu rave I'll kick you in the face" t-shirt.
Now in late '07 New rave is still at large in the alternative scene with a now well established collective of brands still producing items inspired by the style.
'07 also saw Emo expand even more, with an influx of new t-shirt companies producing emo friendly prints.
With the now widely copied Rib cage print tee produced by the likes of Poizen industries, Iron fist & Kill brand to even more unique & creative prints continuing to crop up by UK designers such as Deadscene, Paint the stars & All ends clothing.
Elsewhere on the alternative scene diy designers have been cropping up left, right & centre. With a huge boom in jewellery designers from laser cut pendants to charm laden bracelets. Helped by the cheap cart system site; Big cartel, giving diy designers an accessible platform to sell their wares through to craft site; Etsy, hosting a wide range of designers and even UK communities.
Other aspects have had a rollercoaster year from new designers popping up such as Razor bones; amusing & offensive t-shirts to Cute and evil; fruitsy inspired pieces with animal themed hoodies & shrugs.
To the unfortunate closure of some wonderful companies & designers such as Wysteria & Goth shop.
But the alternative scene at the end of '07 is a mixed bag, with a flurry of well established companies at the heart of the scene continuing to grow & some exciting new brands popping up; '08 looks set to be an interesting year.
